Welcome to Linnaeus University!
Linnaeus University, and the merger between Kalmar and Växjö universities, is an historic event in Swedish higher education and offers opportunities to create something new, exciting and unique.
We have attempted to capture the essential elements of our university in terms of the keywords curiosity, creativity, companionship and utility. An alternative means of getting at the essence of it is to characterize Linnaeus University as a modern international university in the Småland region of southern Sweden.
A modern university is a university which can think innovatively and whose everyday activities are dynamic and formulated in accordance with the demands and needs of the community and the students. It is also a university where there is a balance not only between teaching and research but also between academic curiosity and benefits to the wider community.
The international dimension is of the utmost importance in our efforts to be a cutting-edge university. Our research will be pursued in international competition. On the teaching side, international exchanges and elements of internationalization are on the rise. Internationalization is a central aspect of contemporary society. Europe, through the European Union, is playing a key role in international affairs. The rapidlygrowing emerging economies in Asia and elsewhere are also bringing an increasing influence to bear on Sweden and the rest of Europe.
Linnaeus University will not only strive to contribute internationally but will also play a very important role in regional development. The region most important to us is the one in which we are rooted, Småland. Linnaeus University as a major university with 42,000 students will be central to positive developments in Småland as well as attracting both businesses and an educated and highly-skilled workforce to our region. Linnaeus University must remain sensitive to the needs of the region and shoulder its role as a driving force for regional development.
