Transient drugs and fragments: the medicines of the future?

Sten Ohlson, professor på Linnéuniversitetet

A multitude of transient (weak) biological interactions, either working alone or in concert, occur frequently throughout biological systems and we are now starting to appreciate their significance in complex biological networks. This realization has important consequences in a number of areas such as drug discovery and diagnostics. One of the major problems with transient binding molecules is that they are hard to see and therefore difficult to measure and evaluate. Professor Sten Ohlson will in his presentation focus on key considerations of transient biological interactions in nature and how this knowledge can be applied to drug discovery. Examples will be given on different aspects of transient drugs and fragments; and methods to analyze and screen for their subtle interactions to target receptors. Maybe yet the greatest barrier towards a paradigm shift recognizing the role of transient molecules in pharmaceutical sciences is the general perception that they are non-specific and therefore of no value.
