Cinema & Heritage - Research Seminar

Welcome to the open research seminar “Cinema & Heritage” at Linnaeus University on Wednesday 21 September 2011!

The body of research examining the relationships between cinema and
cultural heritage is growing at a fast pace. The field includes investigations of
the role cinema plays in forming historical consciousnesses and national
identities, as well as considerations of film culture as an increasingly
important part of the cultural national heritage.

In terms of genre, heritage cinemas have emerged periodically in the history
of world cinema, nostalgically imagining and fetishizing the styles and
traditions of a more or less imaginary past. In another sense, heritage cinema
can play an active part in the creation of national consciousness. One
example of this is the National War Film, where beautiful landscapes and
well-known skylines are tied to historic events in an action-packed story.
“Cinema & Heritage” at Linnaeus University 21 September 2011 will allow
researchers and students to address this and other current issues in the field
from the points of view of Film Studies and History.
