To facilitate development and maintenance, various supporting applications are used for example to verify that an IT system is functioning according to plan or in order to reduce the resources required by the system in terms of time and memory usage. An important component in such support applications is programme analysis, which has a tendency to be very time-consuming. It is especially time-consuming when the systems being analysed are large and the demands on the quality of the analysis are high. In a new doctoral thesis from Växjö University, economist Magnus Carlsson has examined the extent of discrimination in the Swedish labour market. The examination has been carried out with the help of an experimental method which involves the researcher sending out identical fictitious job applications in response to real-life advertised vacancies- the applications differ only in terms of the fictitious names of the applicants. Study results are not necessarily dependent on which university the student studies at but rather how motivated the student is to study from the beginning. Only 40% of all students take a formal degree! Having a degree certificate means 13-22% more money in your pocket if you a natural science student from an older university. These are some of the results of economist Susanna Holzer who presented her PhD thesis at Växjö University on 6th November. Taking as his point of departure the claim that all organizations have some purpose in terms of the fulfillment of one or several goals, Dannefjord examines how changes in goals are brought about; do these changes involve conscious or unconscious choices as determining factors? Errors will be fewer, the process takes less time and can be carried out on a more objective basis compared with human assessment. In order to rely on the results, the computer-based quality models must be thoroughly evaluated. Such evaluations are unusual and the few available are difficult to use. In a newly published doctoral thesis from Växjö University, Rüdiger Lincke has investigated the evaluation of a quality model based on the ISO 9126 standard. The analysis takes as its point of departure the argument that if we believe in democracy as the best form of government, the idea should be formulated as to how democracy should be realised and reproduced. Economic outcomes for homosexuals is an area where little research has been done with many unanswered questions. Economist Lina Andersson has shed light on these questions in a new doctoral thesis published by Växjö University.
