Universities, and as a result university libraries, are run in ever more business-like forms. What do librarians think of these changes? This is something that Joacim Hansson, professor in Library and Information Science at Linnaeus University, and Dr. Krister Johannesson at the University of Skövde, asked themselves. And this is irrespective of building material. However, it is more common for people living in wooden buildings to feel that their houses are not as good as indicated by the noise class. But how does the sound actually spread from one apartment to another? Is it possible to design a computer model that calculates how sound vibrations are established? This is something that Åsa Bolmsvik at Linnaeus University studied in her doctoral thesis. To facilitate development and maintenance, various supporting applications are used for example to verify that an IT system is functioning according to plan or in order to reduce the resources required by the system in terms of time and memory usage. An important component in such support applications is programme analysis, which has a tendency to be very time-consuming. It is especially time-consuming when the systems being analysed are large and the demands on the quality of the analysis are high. In a new Linnaeus University PhD thesis, Marcus Edvinsson presents several methods for reducing the amount of time required for applications making use of programme analysis while retaining the same result quality. In a new doctoral thesis from Växjö University, economist Magnus Carlsson has examined the extent of discrimination in the Swedish labour market. The examination has been carried out with the help of an experimental method which involves the researcher sending out identical fictitious job applications in response to real-life advertised vacancies- the applications differ only in terms of the fictitious names of the applicants. Errors will be fewer, the process takes less time and can be carried out on a more objective basis compared with human assessment. In order to rely on the results, the computer-based quality models must be thoroughly evaluated. Such evaluations are unusual and the few available are difficult to use.
