Beam Theory

5 credits

The course is given in the second year of the master program in Sustainable Structural Engineering. It covers different beam theories according to Bernoulli-Euler and Timoshenko, theories for torsion according to St Venant and Vlasov and theory for analysis of instability of beams. It gives insight in, and ability to analyze, the behavior of for example thin-walled beams under loading, how stresses in different kind of beams can be calculated and how instability is prevented. The course covers many phenomena that are not usually dealt with in basic courses of structural mechanics but that practicing structural engineers must be aware of.
