Continuum mechanics

4.5 credits

The course gives an introduction to the mathematical tools and concepts in continuum mechanics. This includes basic tools in continuum mechanics, such as tensors, vectors, matrices, and matrix operations. The theory covers the description of deformation, kinematics, motion and stress in solids and fluids. Constitutive laws and hyperelasticity are also discussed, and some of the fundamental laws of mechanics are introduced. The course consists of lectures where the theory is presented and discussed, exercises where the students practice to apply the theory in hand calculation problems and make use of computer software to solve more complex problems. The course also includes assignments where the students use Matlab.
