Corpus Methods in Practice

15 credits

Corpus linguistics is a widely used method of linguistic inquiry in which large samples of language data are analysed using computers. The quantitative and qualitative findings from corpora allow linguists to study language in an evidence-based fashion. In this course students are introduced to basic and intermediate methods in corpus linguistics and the use of basic statistical methods used in linguistics. We will use several of the most important corpora available today as well as learn how to compile our own corpora. The course does not require programming skills.
