The development of a sustainable Baltic Sea ensures a good economy, a healthy society and dynamic ecosystems to contribute to Green and Blue Growth. The Council of the Baltic States has the vision to transform the Baltic Sea region into the first world’s Eco-region where “ecology and economy work together in a balanced and integrated matter to sustain societies and culture”.
Throughout the region, a wide range of sustainability initiatives and good practices have been adopted at international, national and local level. These range from innovations in clean technology, green transport, energy, landscape networks, cities, education and training. Research and development in the Baltic Sea region contributes to generating cutting-edge solutions for a sustainable development.
The course will allow you to explore some of the main challenges to sustainability today: the demand for energy, climate change, human health, the use of natural resources from land and sea including water, pollution, agricultural run-off, education and life-long learning.
You will participate in a variety of field-based experiences (bird and seal safari, environmental sampling, wind power park, harbour, waste treatment plant, sustainable farming, wetland and fish nurseries) and specialized workshops (Sustainability Days) using the Kalmar Sound and Öland in the Baltic sea as a classroom and a laboratory.
The course blends hands on activities and learning with meeting with faculty, researchers, managers, businessmen, farmers and fishermen.
In Kalmar, Linnaeus University is located in the city centre. Universitetskajen is entirely newly-built and located just next to the sea. Here you become part of a creative knowledge environment.
The city centre is also where most students live. Everything is available within a ten-minute bicycle ride, regardless of whether you want to take a swim in the sea, study, do some shopping, or work out. Historical buildings and cobblestone streets give charm to the city. When it is sunny, the area next to Kalmar Castle’s moat is filled with studying and sunbathing students. Student life is a natural part of Kalmar. This is where your dream of the future begins!
