In this course, different kinds of changes in language are addressed, for example, changes in phonology, semantics and syntax. The course also covers linguistic manners of describing and explaining these changes. Changes currently in progress will be studied and placed in a social and communicative context. Particular emphasis is placed on carrying out corpus-based studies of linguistic variation and change.
In this course, the use of the English language on the Internet is also addressed, i.e., computer-attained discourse. During the course, students will gather and compile their own corpus of computer-attained material, familiarize themselves with various analytical methods and apply these on an analysis of computer-attained discourse. Particular emphasis is placed on reading and critically reviewing scholarly articles. Oral and written presentations will be used for training the use of linguistic theories and methods.
