EU Policy-making and its Implementation

7.5 credits

How are decisions made and adopted at the EU level and how are these decisions implemented in the member states? What actors are involved in this policy process and what are the current challenges in relation to this process in the EU and its member states? This course focuses on these issues and will in addition to a brief historical overview of the growth of the EU, look into the core institutions within the union and the policy-making in the EU. The course will also look into the implementation of EU policies in a multi-level governance system. We will also discuss the EU core policy areas and current crises and their impact on EU policy-making as well as on the entire EU (crises to be discussed concern the rise of Euroscepticism, the rise of radical right parties and nationalism, the democratic backsliding, the economic crisis, the Eurozone crisis, the asylum crisis, BREXIT, and the Corona crisis). The emphasis of the course is to link these crises to the most current theories within the field of European (dis)integration.
