In recent years, globalization has become a key concept and a whole explanatory dimension in the Social Sciences. During the first course module you will learn about and discuss the impact of globalization from different perspectives, such as development, the evolution of democracy and the nation state, the pursuit of human rights, the social consequences of globalization and the creation of a globalized culture.
The second part focuses on democratization. The main objective of this part of the course is to introduce you to the concepts, theoretical perspectives and empirical findings within the research on democratization. The course begins with a discussion on core concepts, definitions and theories that frames the research on democratization. After that the historical and contemporary trends of democratization in the world will be explored.
Part three brings up international law and you are introduced to the central and basic elements of the area. You will study the system of principles, norms, institutions and procedures of international law, both in an historical and present context.
The fourth and last part of the course focuses on transformations of the world economy. Since the economy is central in understanding the transformations of the world you will learn about issues like inflation, unemployment, trade, welfare promotion, poverty, external shocks such as financial crises, recession, energy supply, environmental problems and the alike. You will also be discussing varieties of capitalism and welfare systems as well as political aspects of the workings of economy.

Here you will have five minutes’ walking distance to friends, restaurants, lecture rooms, gym, grocery store, the University Library, nature trails, and student pubs. If you live in another part of Växjö, you can quickly get to the university by bus or bicycle.

Växjö is also a picturesque city where you are always close to forests and water.
