Industrial Ecology

7.5 hp

Industrial Ecology (IE) is an interdisciplinary field that focuses on the sustainable combination of Business, Environment & Technology. Here the human-induced transformation of materials and energy from the perspectives of the environment and sustainability are investigated in a systematic way. Industrial ecology is about describing and evaluating products and processes associated with them, from the collection of virgin materials, through processing of the material, during manufacturing, use and to the final disposal of the end of life product. Within industrial ecology, basic ideas are taken from natural flows, processes and cycles, as well as searches for strategies for different solutions similar to those found in nature. This highlights the relationship between the production and the environment and provides a very important link between engineering and natural sciences.

The tools within industrial ecology are used to optimize the total use of materials and energy and economic investments, as well as to reduce the burden of various emissions and wastes, to air, soil, water and other natural resources. These tools are used both within constructions and during follow-up processes in the community. Industrial ecology is thus an important component for work with product development, technological change, eco-efficiency, eco-design and higher producer responsibility and to reduce the environmental load. Teaching and literature are in English.

Kalmar

The city of Kalmar is situated on the southeast coast of Sweden. Kalmar is a beautiful city with 65,000 inhabitants and a long history dating back to the Middle Ages, with many cosy neighbourhoods and great charm.
