As predicted by Gartner, there will be over 26 billion connected devices by 2020! The Internet of Things (IoT) is a system of interrelated computing devices able to transfer data over a network. IoT technologies include computing devices that can be controlled via smartphones or computers. The number of connected things in the world is ever increasing. We can connect and control devices like coffee makers, smart TV, fridge, washing machines, lamps, and almost anything else you can think of. If you want to measure the humidity of the soil in your garden, or perhaps want to get a notification of when the mail has arrived – these are all possible.

In this applied IoT course, you will learn how to build a device connected to the internet. The course also focuses on the basics of the IoT. You will learn all the steps of building your device from the idea to an actual application. We will use mainstream and cheap sensors, connecting them to a microcomputer operated by MicroPython. You will not only learn about basic electronic circuits but also programming and 3D-printing. The course will introduce different IoT wireless protocols such as LoRa or Sigfox. Students will also learn data visualization and data management using a database.

After completing the course, the students will (1) have a fundamental knowledge of the IoT, (2) learn basic programming in Python and MicroPython, (3) have an essential understanding of sensors and sensor data gathering, (4) an understanding IoT infrastructure and message protocols, (5) know about data visualization and database, (6) have hand-on experience of developing an IoT project.

The course is applied, which means you will be spending a lot of time working with both IoT devices and programming. A team of engaged instructors will supervise all the workshops.


To study on a distance education will give you different opportunities than on-campus teaching. It means that, to a large extent, you will be able to plan your studies yourself, both in terms of time and place.

However, keep in mind that most distance education includes a number of compulsory digital lectures and digital seminars during the weekdays. Some distance education also include compulsory get-togethers, for which you will have to travel to Växjö or Kalmar.

There are a number of different ways to be a distance student, the common denominator being that a large part of your study work is carried out on the web. You communicate with the teacher and your fellow students using a learning platform with discussion forums, group work, recorded lectures or video meetings using a web cam.
