Introduction to Applied Internet of Things
7.5 credits
The IoT revolution is here, and it's transforming everything. Are you ready to be a part of it? This course gives you an introduction to the dynamic world of interconnected devices, equipping you with the practical skills to design, build, and deploy your own IoT solutions. Explore the latest trends, from smart homes and industrial automation to cutting-edge applications in healthcare and beyond. Learn to harness the power of sensors, data analytics, and cloud platforms to create innovative IoT projects. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned tech enthusiast, this course will empower you to navigate the rapidly expanding landscape of connected devices and shape the future of technology.
In this applied IoT course, you will learn how to build a device connected to the internet. The course also focuses on the basics of the IoT. You will learn all the steps of building your device from the idea to an actual application. We will use mainstream and cheap sensors, connecting them to a microcomputer operated by MicroPython. You will not only learn about basic electronic circuits but also programming and 3D-printing. The course will introduce different IoT wireless protocols such as LoRa or Sigfox. Students will also learn data visualization and data management using a database.
After completing the course, the students will (1) have a fundamental knowledge of the IoT, (2) learn basic programming in Python and MicroPython, (3) have an essential understanding of sensors and sensor data gathering, (4) an understanding IoT infrastructure and message protocols, (5) know about data visualization and database, (6) have hand-on experience of developing an IoT project.
The course is applied and involves hands-on work with hardware.
You will need to purchase your own equipment in advance, see suggested list of materials on the course web page.

Distance – study where you are
Distance learning can be structured in different ways – it may be entirely online, or include a few on-campus sessions or meetings at one of our learning centres. The common factor is that most of the learning happens online.
You communicate with your teacher and fellow students through a learning platform, which provides access to discussion forums, group work opportunities, and digital meetings. In many cases, you also have access to recorded lectures via the platform.
The advantage of distance learning is its flexibility – ideal for those who want more freedom to decide when and where to study. However, keep in mind that some mandatory elements of your programme may take place during working hours, even if they are conducted online.
Build your own degree
Did you know that you can combine single-subject courses to build your own degree? In this way, you can design your own degree based on your interests and the career you are aiming for. This does not apply to all courses so make sure to check with a study counsellor at the faculty. Learn more about how you can build your own degree and become unique on the labour market.
