Marine Ecology, Advanced Level

Marine and estuarine ecosystems play a central role in the health of our planet. This course examines the key ecological processes that shape and maintain marine communities, and how healthy marine ecosystems are affected by e.g. overfishing, eutrophication, habitat modification and rapid climate change. Topics to be covered will include: biogeochemical cycling and productivity, marine population and community ecology, biogeography, sustainable management and conservation. Students will gain first-hand experience in quantitative data collection and analysis, experimental design and field work in the Baltic Sea. This course is at the advanced level and has focus on critical thinking, experimental design and communication of results. The course will provide the student with knowledge and skills required for both a carrier in and outside academia.
The course can be taken in parallel to Freshwater Ecology, Advanced Level and Fish Ecology, Advanced Level.
