Media and News Literacy

This course is open to any student who wants to become an enlightened citizen, by acquiring the necessary tools for decrypting media content, to fully and actively participate in the life of the democratic society.
This course is made for you if you wish:
- to master media and news literacy skills, essential tools for helping you to separate opinion from information, propaganda from political commentary – which constitute a prerequisite for making informed decisions;
- to benefit even more from the power of media through accessing, understanding, analyzing, learning and creating;
- to develop your critical awareness and to foster your own participation in the media.
As a participant, you will learn to develop source criticism, to understand how news is produced, to grasp how media and money are interrelated, and, last but not least to figure out how representation in media and participation in the society are related.
At the end of the course, the following know-how will be acquired: to be able to work against stereotypes; to create intercultural dialogues; to understand the media process; and to develop critical thinking skills.

Kalmar

In Kalmar, Linnaeus University is located in the city centre. Universitetskajen is entirely newly-built and located just next to the sea. Here you become part of a creative knowledge environment.

The city centre is also where most students live. Everything is available within a ten-minute bicycle ride, regardless of whether you want to take a swim in the sea, study, do some shopping, or work out. Historical buildings and cobblestone streets give charm to the city. When it is sunny, the area next to Kalmar Castle’s moat is filled with studying and sunbathing students.
