Nordic Nostalgia

15 credits

What do gruesome murders in Stockholm, multicultural love affairs in Oslo, erotic adventures in Swedish summers, Finnish tango and Moomin dad turning into a lighthouse keeper have in common? They are part of reading Nordic cultural history through the theoretical and methodological lens of nostalgia. This course introduces you to general concepts and histories of nostalgia and how Nordic culture, mostly cinema, music and literature in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, can be approached and analyzed utilizing nostalgia as a historicizing and aesthetical concept. This course is structured chronologically around certain nostalgic themes starting out with nostalgia and modernity (modernism) and ending up in contemporary nostalgic discussions of climate change and the Anthropocene.
