Digital Product Passports for Sustainable Value Chains
This course provides practical and up-to-date knowledge about Digital Product Passports (DPP) and how they can be used to increase transparency, traceability, and sustainability in value chains. The course combines theory, guest lectures, and hands-on workshops to give you directly applicable understanding and tools for your organization.

Content
The course is designed for those who want to understand how Digital Product Passports can be used to improve product traceability, create value in circular business models, and strengthen your organization’s sustainability strategy.
It covers fundamental principles of data traceability in value chains and highlights the role of digitalization in sustainable development. Furthermore, it introduces technology and architecture for Digital Product Passports, focusing on data architecture as well as technical possibilities and limitations. The course also addresses circularity and sustainability indicators, showing how Digital Product Passports can be used to measure and report circularity. Through case studies and applied exercises, you will explore practical examples from real implementations and work on roadmaps for introducing Digital Product Passports in your organization.
After completing the course, you will be able to:
- Describe the role of Digital Product Passports in sustainable value chains
- Identify challenges and opportunities related to data traceability
- Design a roadmap for implementing DPP
- Understand how data can be used for circularity and sustainability efforts
Practical information
The course uses modern teaching methods, including:
- Flipped classroom: pre-recorded lectures to watch at your own pace
- Interactive workshops on campus in Växjö
- Materials such as scientific articles and relevant case studies
All materials will be available digitally and include reading materials, lecture slides, etc. Lectures may be delivered live via Teams at scheduled times or viewed later through recordings to suit participants.
There will be three on-site workshops in Växjö, focusing on interaction with the instructor and participants to share real-world experiences and insights. The course will be delivered flexibly to help you combine coursework with your ongoing professional commitments.
The course is graded on a scale from A–F.
Assessment consists of:
- Three mandatory assignments
- Participation in seminars and workshops

Entry requirements
The basic eligibility requirement for this course is a bachelor’s degree. Applicants with equivalent professional experience are also welcome. Two years of relevant work experience is considered equivalent to one year of university-level studies at the bachelor level.
The course provides 3 credits.
This course is developed within the project Smart Industry phase 2 and funded by the Swedish Knowledge Foundation (KK-stiftelsen). It is free of charge for you.
