Books
At the University Library you can find relevant books , both printed and e-books.
You can find the University Library's books (printed and e-books) in OneSearch. Choose Books as material type if you only want books as search result.
Printed books
You can see in OneSearch if the book is available in Växjö and/or Kalmar, on which shelf and if it's on loan or not. A map helps you find the book. More information about Borrowing and ordering.
If the book you need is not in OneSearch, you can search in Libris, which is a common catalog for libraries in Sweden. There, you can leave a request directly from a title for us to borrow or purchase the book. More information about Interlibrary loans and purchase suggestions.
E-books
The University Library buys e-books from several different suppliers. Loan periods and printing regulations may vary from one e-book to another, depending on the supplier.
All our e-books are available for online reading and many can be downloaded to your own computer, tablet or smartphone for limited periods of time. Most titles can be read by an unlimited number of users but some may only be read by one or three users at a time.
Downloading
The loan period available for download may vary. You can see the loan periods by the respective titles.
In order to read a downloaded book you need the program Adobe Digital Editions for computers or Aldiko or Bluefire reader for smartphones or tablets.
Some vendors, such as Ebook Central or Ebsco, requires you to create an account at the vendor to be able to download books. This is free of charge. The account is also needed if you wish to add bookmarks or add comments when reading online.
Printing
Printing pages or saving them as pdf may be limited to a certain number of pages or a percentage of the book. You can see the limitations by the respective titles.
Common problems with e-books
The device must be authorized before you can read a downloaded book. Adobe Digital Editions may be authorized for an individual computer but if you want to be able to read the e-book on several different devices or using different software, you have to create an Adobe ID and use that to authorize your device. Creating an Adobe ID (an account) is free.
First a small metadata file with the file extension ascm will be downloaded. This file must be opened in the reader software which will then download the actual e-book as an ePUB or PDF file.
If the reader software does not succeed in downloading the e-book, an error message might appear, such as “Error getting License. License Server Communication Problem: E_ADEPT_XML_Syntax”. This is most likely a temporary communication error, but if the problem remains you can try the following steps:
- Deauthorize. In Adobe Digital Editions this is done by choosing the Library View and then pressing Ctrl+Shift+D
- Uninstall and download the reader software again.
- Re-authorize. In Adobe Digital Editions this is done by choosing the Library View and then choosing Authorization from the Help menu.
- Before trying to download the same book again: remove all ascm files from your computer. Empty cache and cookies from the web browser you are using to download the e-books.
Sometimes e-books in PDF format can be difficult to open. Your device's default reader may not work well with the downloaded PDF. Download Adobe Reader and see if that helps.
