The background of our interest relates to the complexity in everyday life and work practices. Our world is complex and uncertain, while our thinking about the world is linear and structured. This thinking permeates all areas of life, including within the business, industry and organizational sector in terms of leadership, development, maintenance and further on. Society and organizations are more dynamic and complex then we consider them to be, while our thinking and our ambitions tend to be more linear and problem-solving oriented.
Applying systems thinking allows to include additional aspects and interconnecting relationships, which influence the impact of digitalization in organizations. Systems thinking provides methods and tools for “thinking about the thinking”, and includes several perspectives. Thus, it frames the situation of interest more holistically, including the context in which it interacts.
When we take time to think about the ways we think, ideas that can change the world becomes possible (Derek Cabrera, 2020).
At the Linnaeus University Systems Community (LNU-STC) we apply systems thinking in several areas, with our main focus on digitalization and digital transformation.
Sustainable and resilient digitalization and digital transformation
The development and use of digital technologies enable innovations such as new products and services, including ways of managing, organizing and coordinating. Digital technologies also pose challenges. The challenges often lie in the dynamic nature of societal, and hence organizational, evolution and rapid changes in terms of needs, adaptation and development.
We argue that systems thinking is a benefit when tackling the challenges and opportunities brought by digital technologies and digitalization. Systems thinking provides methodologies for digitalization and digital transformation that are resilient and flexible enough to aid organizations staying in line with current and future societal changes and needs.

- International visiting professor of systems thinking for sustainability, the Knowledge Foundation, Sept 2020–2021.
- Maker tour – Mot nya höjder, ongoing evaluative research, Linnaeus University in collaboration with The Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth (Tillväxtverket) and Vinnova, Jan 2017–2021.
- Perform – the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No 765395. This project focuses on educating future managers in the digital retail sector, in collaboration with fifteen European higher education institutions and business organizations, 2018–2021.
- DI-PhDictkes – an Erasmus Key Action 2 project for the development and implementation of a PhD program in ICT for Kosovo education system in collaboration with three Kosovo HEI – University of Prishtina, UBT Higher Education Institution and University of Prizren – and with Norwegian University of Science and Technology and South-East European Research Centre.
