PhD Students at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities
As a PhD student at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, you have every opportunity to engage in an international research environment. Our subjects are active on the international stage in many ways. Even on campus, you'll notice our international focus, with many of our students coming from other countries and our faculty members participating in international networks and various exchanges.
All of our PhD students are encouraged to spend part of their studies at a foreign institution. This is a unique opportunity for you to gain new perspectives on your research while also beginning to build a network of contacts and future collaborators beyond Sweden.
An international stay can range from a few weeks of coursework at a foreign institution to a full semester abroad for data collection, possibly combined with attending a conference. Discuss your plans for an international stay with your supervisor!

General Opportunities for Doctoral Students at Linnaeus University
Erasmus+ Traineeship Grants for Students
As a doctoral student, you can apply for a traineeship grant, which can also be used for dissertation-related work at a university, company, or organisation within Europe. These funds cannot overlap with other Erasmus+ grants, so be sure to separate the periods when applying.
Erasmus+ Grant for Studies
Doctoral students can also apply for exchange studies at one of the institutions with which we have doctoral exchange agreements. The exchange period varies from 3–6 months to up to a year. As a doctoral student, you do not need to apply during the regular exchange study application period. Instead, you can contact our international coordinator, who will assist in identifying potential partner institutions and sending out enquiries. For more information, please contact Cecilia Hartwich at mobility.fkh@lnu.se.
Staff Training within the EU (Erasmus+)
Doctoral students can also apply for funding for staff mobility. Staff training can take the form of job shadowing at a university or company/organisation, participation in courses, seminars, or workshops. The activity should aim to develop innovative methods for teaching, research, administration, or organisation that can benefit your home institution.
Teaching Mobility within the EU (Erasmus+)
Doctoral students are also eligible to apply for teaching mobility funding through Erasmus+. Teaching mobility involves teaching at least eight hours per week for a minimum of two days or combining teaching with an exchange of experiences, which reduces the teaching requirement to four hours.

Incoming PhD Students to the Faculty of Arts and Humanities
Incoming doctoral students are those who do not undertake their entire doctoral education at Linnaeus University, but who visit the Faculty of Arts and Humanities for a shorter or longer period. Guest doctoral students may come from our international partners or other universities worldwide.
Incoming PhD student
To ensure a well-planned and smooth visit, it is important that the visit is approved by the Head of Department well in advance. As a supervisor or host of an incoming doctoral student, you should:
Obtain approval from the Head of Department
Inform the Head of Department of the planned visit and obtain their approval before any administrative actions are initiated. This step is crucial for the faculty to provide the necessary support, such as a workspace, access card, Lnu account, and email address.
Register the visit using the form
Complete the electronic form for incoming doctoral students as soon as possible, and no later than one month prior to the planned visit. This timeframe is important to ensure that all administrative and practical arrangements can be made in good time, and that relevant information can be communicated to other parties concerned.
If the visit is scheduled to begin immediately after the summer, the registration should be completed before the end of the preceding spring term to ensure that all preparations can be carried out before the start of the term.
Once the form has been completed, the following occurs:
-
Head of Department and support staff: Receive the information to review workspace availability, order access cards, set up an Lnu account including email, etc.
-
Research Secretary: Is informed of the visit and supports the dissemination of information to our doctoral students at the faculty.
-
International Office: Provides welcome information, practical guidance regarding accommodation in Växjö and Kalmar, and manages certain scholarships if relevant.
-
Insurance Certificate: Prepared for the doctoral student if needed; indicate below. This will be sent to the two email addresses provided in the form.
