For those working with research
The faculty’s research is conducted with high quality in strong environments of various sizes. Our strategy for quality assurance and development is based on the university’s joint research strategy.
The strategy covers the areas of open science, good research practice, and academic freedom as guiding themes. The overall goal is to create strong, sustainable, and comprehensive academic environments, with profiles and profile areas at all levels.

External Research Funding Opportunities Available for Application
On Linnaeus University’s central page for research project applications and funding, you will find valuable and useful information on everything from funders and calls for proposals to application processes and the utilization of research results.
Project Applications and Project Reporting
When applying for projects, the Work procedure project applications must be followed in its entirety. The routine clearly outlines the division of responsibilities and the necessary steps before, during, and after the application process—including approval by the head of department/dean, budget preparation, dean’s certificate, registration, and management after notification from the funder.
⚠️ All steps in the routine must be followed to ensure the correct handling of project applications!

Allocation of Research Funding
The Faculty of Technology has a model for the allocation of the faculty’s research grants, established by the Faculty Board.
Individual allocations are distributed as compensation in the form of time to active researchers, in proportion to the extent of their employment. The faculty’s financial conditions for the upcoming period are always taken into account. In order to be considered an active researcher, the criteria for active researchers must be met (see further down the page).
Researchers must also submit an annual report of their research activity. This is done by completing a survey in Survey & Report. In 2025, the deadline for submitting the survey was June 22. A link to the survey was emailed at the end of May.
Allocated funds are assigned to the department/research subject, where the final use is determined by them. In this decision, the faculty’s criteria should serve as guidance.
Below are the principles established for the 2025 allocation:
- Professors receive a base allocation of 30%
- Associate Professors (Docents) receive a base allocation of 10%
- An additional 5% is granted for supervising one doctoral student, and 10% for supervising two or more doctoral students
- Senior Lecturers receive a base allocation of 5%
- All supervision time and the entire allocation to the group of Senior Lecturers are pooled into a departmental share
- The departmental share should be used for initiatives of particular importance and anchored in the research collegium or equivalent at the department. Supervision time should be distributed as actual supervision time and anchored in the research education collegium or equivalent at the department. Each allocation must be reported to the faculty management.
Professors, associate professors, and senior lecturers who do not meet the criteria for active researchers receive no allocation.
Criteria for Active Researchers
Professors
Central allocation model.
An active researcher as a professor means fulfilling most of the following:
- Being active in doctoral education, including serving as principal supervisor and co-publishing with doctoral students,
- Regularly publishing in reputable journals/conferences,
- Actively applying for funding for their research group or actively working to establish a research group,
- Presenting a research plan for themselves and their group covering the next three to five years.
Associate Professors (Docents)
Central allocation model.
An active researcher as an associate professor means fulfilling most of the following:
- Being active in doctoral education,
- Regularly publishing in reputable journals/conferences,
- Actively applying for funding together with others,
- Presenting a research plan for themselves covering the next three years.
Senior Lecturers
Central allocation model.
An active researcher as a senior lecturer means fulfilling the following:
- Actively applying for external funding alone or together with others,
- Publishing regularly,
- Presenting a research plan for the coming two years.
Strategic Funds
Strategic funds are applied for by faculties through the Dean. Before an application for strategic funds can be considered, the project must be discussed with the Dean. A Dean’s certificate must be completed and signed. The application for strategic funds is then prepared by the faculty’s controller together with the project manager.
More information can be found on the page about the central process for applying for strategic funds.
