Discontinuation of a course
According to the university’s local regulations (Dnr. 2022/2841–1.1.1), a course should be discontinued when it is no longer offered to students. Below, I describe how this process is handled at FTK.
A course that is no longer conducted or announced to students is defined as a course that should be discontinued. Discontinuation of a course does not need to occur if the faculty only intends to take a few terms’ break from announcing the course.
The discontinuation of a course must adhere to the provisions outlined in the Local Rules for Course and Examination at the Undergraduate and Advanced Levels:
- In conjunction with discontinuing a course, an additional three examination opportunities for the course must be provided for at least one year. In total, the discontinued course must have offered at least five examination opportunities.
- When a course is discontinued, the university should make efforts to notify affected students.
- The faculty compiles all ongoing course discontinuations on a Moodle page and lists them on Lnu.se
The procedure for discontinuation of a course is described as follows
-
Guidelines and Regulations for Course Discontinuation: This section defines the criteria for considering the discontinuation of a course that is no longer offered to students. Clear guidelines for discontinuation and exceptions are presented in accordance with local rules for course and examination.
-
Initiatives and Responsibilities for Course Discontinuation: The process for initiating course discontinuation is described, including who can propose discontinuation and the division of responsibilities among the head of department, instructors, and educational administrators. It is clarified that the final decision on discontinuation rests with the dean.
-
Workflow for Course Discontinuation: A detailed process description for discontinuing courses is provided, including information on how discontinuation decisions are made, the stakeholders involved in the process, and the documents that should be included in the decision-making process. A standardized workflow is presented, from identifying the need for discontinuation to concluding communication with relevant parties.
