Internal Procedure for Discontinuing Programmes
Application for Discontinuing Programmes
Discontinuation of programmes falls into two categories:
- Temporary, a zero intake for, for example, one academic year with the aim of conducting development work so that it can return to the programme offerings.
- Permanent, the programme is discontinued with the aim of being removed from the faculty's educational offerings.
The category in question should be stated in the application for discontinuation along with a justification for why the programme should be discontinued.
Risk and Impact Analysis
- The head(s) of department prepare a risk and impact analysis in dialogue with the programme director and other relevant heads of department.
- The head(s) of department assess whether the discontinuation falls within the scope of MBL negotiations.
- Coordination is carried out between the relevant heads of department.
Before a decision, the application and the risk and impact analysis should be prepared so that student representatives can review the documents and have the opportunity to comment. The application with supporting documents is forwarded to the programme director, the Education Council, the relevant subject collegiums, and the Management Group.
Decision to Temporarily Discontinue Programmes
- If the discontinuation is due to low application pressure, the dean decides.
- If the discontinuation is due to another reason, the Faculty Board decides. Decisions can, if necessary, be made per capsulam.
Decision to Permanently Discontinue Programmes
- The Faculty Board decides. Decisions can, if necessary, be made per capsulam.

Local regulations and processes at Linnaeus University
In addition to the syllabus itself, supplementary information is needed, which is described in LNU's principles for the evaluation of new degree programmes. This includes several criteria that must be assessed, and the syllabus itself constitutes an appendix, such as environmental analysis, teacher competence and capacity, and student influence.
The creation and revision of the programme syllabus are regulated by local regulations and processes descriptions:
- Local regulations for degree programmes at the first- and second-cycle levels at Linnaeus University.
- Process description for appraisal of new degree programmes at the first- and second-cycle levels at Linnaeus University
You can find the documents on Medarbetare/Staff under education, Governing documents.
Decisions on the Right to Award Professional Degrees are made by UKÄ.
Regulations and Recommendations for Writing Prerequisites
The Admissions Section at LNU has created a page for regulations and recommendations for writing prerequisites as support in formulating prerequisites in course and programme syllabi. You can find the page on Medarbetare/Staff: Regulations and Recommendations for Writing Prerequisites (only in Swedish).

Impact Analysis
Before creating a new course or revising an existing one, the initiator, in consultation with the relevant programme managers, heads of department, other relevant stakeholders, and Faculty Office, must consider the following:
- Available resources in terms of finances and personnel, as well as the consequences for HST in consultation with the head of department.
- For programme courses that change title and/or objectives and content, this must be coordinated with the relevant programme manager. Changes of this nature may need to be preceded by a revision of the syllabus (note that this has a different timeline) and may also affect course mapping and AoL measurements.
- Before revising examinations and assessment components, a plan should be established for how students who have not completed the examinations in the course can complete them after the revision.
- If the change in assessment components is so extensive that students who have not completed the course will not be able to finish it, the course should instead receive a new course code. This means that the previous version of the course syllabus will be discontinued in accordance with applicable procedures at the School of Business and Economics and in accordance with local regulations.
- If the course includes a main area established at another faculty, that faculty must be informed.
- Ensure that the new course or the proposed revision complies with local regulations at LNU.

Discontinuation of programme and course
If you wish to discontinue a programme or course, please follow the procedure below.
Procedure
Discontinuation of Programme
When discontinuing a programme that is to be permanently removed from the faculty's programme offerings, a plan for the discontinuation of the programme and its constituent courses must be developed after the decision to discontinue.
The decision to discontinue a programme is made by the Faculty Board after the nominal study period for the last admitted cohort has passed, i.e., the estimated time required for a student to complete the programme at the standard rate of study (based on the last admission to the first term of the programme) plus an additional two terms, referred to as a phase out period. For example, a bachelor's programme is decided to be discontinued when the normal study period for the last cohort has passed.
Brief Procedure for Discontinuing a Programme
- Contact the Education Council via utbildning@lnu.se
- The Education Council informs the Management Group of the proposal
- The administrator responsible for programme discontinuation is informed and prepares documentation on programme structure, student numbers, proposed timeline, and any courses within the programme that should also be discontinued
- The Education Council informs the Faculty Board, which makes the decision on discontinuation
- The Education Administration is responsible for informing affected students
- The discontinuation process can begin
Discontinuation of Course
When a new course is created to replace an existing course, the existing course should be discontinued.
Brief procedure below for discontinuing a course
- Contact kursplaner.feh@lnu.se
- Plan how and when final examinations are possible, at least 3 examination opportunities over at least 366 days
- The education administration takes the course to the dean and decision meeting in consultation with the head of department or dean
- The education administration is responsible for informing affected students
- The discontinuation process of at least 366 days can begin
On Lnu.se, it is also possible to search for courses that are being discontinued. The discontinuation of educational programmes is not displayed on Lnu.se.
The procedure for discontinuing courses and educational programmes can be found in the School of Business and Economics' governing documents.
