Linking to databases, articles and e-books

On this page you will find tips about how to link to the library’s resources from learning platforms and course homepages.

Linking to databases

Links to databases have to go through the Linnaeus University proxy server in order to function outside of campus. This also applies to open databases such as PubMed and Google Scholar that require login to the university proxy in order to access full text articles that we subscribe to.

To create a link that goes through the proxy server, first look up the database in the library’s list of databases. Then copy the link by selecting the name of the database, right-clicking and choosing “Copy shortcut”. Paste the link where you want it by right-clicking and choosing “Paste”.

Linking to articles

In OneSearch as well as a number of our databases such as Business Source Premier and other EBSCO databases, you link to a so-called “permalink”. You can find this link by looking up the article in the database and clicking “permalink”. You will then get a link that you can copy.

If you want students to be able to access the article outside of campus, the link must go through the university’s proxy server. In order to create such a link, add the proxy server’s web address before the article’s web address.

Example:

Proxy server: http://proxy.lnu.se/login?url=

The article’s web address:

http://llc.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/21/suppl_1/77.pdf

Complete link:

http://proxy.lnu.se/login?url=http://llc.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/21/suppl_1/77.pdf

Tip: It is easier to use Notepad than Word when connecting two web addresses.

Always check the links each time you start the course as links to articles can sometimes be altered.

Exceptions

ACM

In ACM you link to something called a DOI number. You can find this by looking up the article in ACM and clicking on the title. Copy the link after “doi”. Right-click on the link and choose Copy shortcut or copy the number and paste it together with this URL: http://dx.doi.org/ . Then add the proxy server’s web address.

Example:

The article’s DOI number: 10.1145/1067721.1067727

DOI-URL: http://dx.doi.org/

Proxy server: http://proxy.lnu.se/login?url=

Complete link:

http://proxy.lnu.se/login?url=http://dx.doi.org/10.1145/1067721.1067727

Cambridge Journals

Look up the article in Cambridge Journals. Click on the title and you will see an abstract. Copy the link after “DOI”. Right-click on the link and choose “Copy link address”. Add the proxy server’s web address according to the example above.

Example: http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/S1359135501001063

Wiley Online Library

Look up the article in Wiley Online Library. Copy the number after “DOI” and paste it together with this URL: http://dx.doi.org/ Then add the proxy server’s web address.

Example

The article’s DOI number: 10.1111/j.1751-9020.2011.00386.x

DOI-URL: http://dx.doi.org/

Proxy server: http://proxy.lnu.se/login?url=

Complete link:

http://proxy.lnu.se/login?url=http://dx.doi.org/10.1111/j.1751-9020.2011.00386.x

Linking to e-books and encyclopedias

Links to e-books, like articles, have to go through the university’s proxy server in order to be reached outside of campus. The proxy server’s web address is added to the book’s web address according to the same instructions as for articles (see above).

ProQuest Ebook Central (formerly called Ebrary)

Look up the book and click on the title. Click “Share Link to Book” in the menu on the left. Copy the link. You can also go to a specific page in the book and do the same thing; you will then get a link directly to that page.  “Share Link to Book” will in that case be shown as an icon in the form of a chain link.

In order to be able to open the book outside of campus you must add the Lnu proxy server web address.

Example

Proxy server: http://proxy.lnu.se/login?url=

The book’s web address:

http://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/linne-ebooks/detail.action?docID=1609394

Complete link: http://proxy.lnu.se/login?url=http://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/linne-ebooks/detail.action?docID=1609394
