Anti Plagiarism system
From October 2025, Inspera Originality is Lnu's official system for preventing and identifying plagiarism in student work.
Inspera Originality
Inspera Originality is our new plagiarism detection system. Initially, there are some issues and bugs: See this article in the Service Portal for known issues and answers to common questions.
Our text-matching system, Ouriginal, which was provided through Sunet, has stopped functioning as of the end of October 2025. The company that owns Ouriginal will discontinue the system completely in 2026. Universities that have been using Ouriginal — that is, almost all Swedish higher education institutions — have been forced to switch to another text-matching system. Therefore, Sunet carried out a procurement process that was completed just before the summer, and the system that won the bid was Inspera Originality. It is owned by the same company that provides our digital examination system, Inspera Assessment.
However, the transition from one system to the other will involve an adjustment period. At Linnaeus University, we have attempted to extend the contract with Ouriginal until the end of 2025 to allow for a smoother transition, but the company has refused.
Important dates
- We will have access to Inspera Originality from October 1st
So we will have both systems in parallel for a month.
Inspera is working on an integration that will work directly in Moodle's submissions, in the same way that Ouriginal works today. This is planned to be ready by Q4 2025, i.e. sometime during October-December 2025. We have not been able to get a more precise date yet. - Our access to Ouriginal will end from November 1st, 2025
From November 1st, you will no longer have access to Ouriginal at all, including comparison reports. Neither via Moodle nor the personal Ouriginal account, if you have one.
What you need to consider regarding the shutdown of Ouriginal
- It will be possible to upload documents to Ouriginal for review until the system is shut down. However, it is important to access the analysis reports before November 1, when access to them will be completely shut down.
- Download the analysis reports you may want to save.
Either via the information in Moodle that has been sent to Moodle's functional address, or by logging into your own Ouriginal account to download reports of work that has been sent to your own Ouriginal address.- In the course room in Moodle, click on a submitted assignment's Ouriginal link to access the analysis report.
Then click on the download arrow in the top right corner of Ouriginal.
- If you have your own Ouriginal account and want to download the analysis report from there, log in to https://ouriginal.com/login/, go to the report and click on the download link there.
- In the course room in Moodle, click on a submitted assignment's Ouriginal link to access the analysis report.
- The functionality to use plagiarism check in Moodle's forums and in free text answers in tests is unfortunately being lost, as Originality lacks these features. This will be submitted as a development request to the supplier.
Getting started with Inspera Originality
Currently, you can only use Inspera Originality via Moodle. There is also a portal, but it is not yet available.
Use Inspera Originality in Moodle
Currently, Inspera Originality does not have an integration with Moodle's own assignment activities. According to Inspera, they will have such an integration ready by the end of 2025.
Pending this integration, a special Inspera Originality assignment needs to be added when you want to check plagiarism on student submissions. You cannot use the regular Assignment or Forum activity.
Please note that there are also some limitations with Inspera Originality assignment that are worth considering:
- Students can only submit ONE file per assignment
- You can not use anonymous submissions due to lack of communication between Inspera Originality and Moodle
- Grading must be done in the gradebook instead of directly in the assignment
- There is no way to send feedback files to the student, only text as feedback.
We have reported these issues to Inspera and hopefully the system will be improved soon.
