Statistics

Within the subject of statistics, we work with the methods that are used to collect, process, analyse, and present data. Data that is used as a basis for big and small decisions within many different fields.

The English statistician Maurice Kendall wrote in 1942 that statisticians, “have already overrun every branch of science with a rapidity of conquest rivaled only by Attila, Mohammed, and the Colorado beetle.”

Statistics is sometimes used to mean a set of numerical data, for instance, statistics of electricity prices, voters’ political views, or car accidents caused by intoxication. In this meaning statistics is simply synonymous to data. But when used as a noun, “Statistics” is also the name of the scientific field of how to analyze and draw conclusions from data. “Statistical data analysis” is hence synonymous for “Statistics”, and this will be our interpretation of the term throughout this web page.

Education

At Linnaeus University, you can study statistics as part of several programmes or as single-subject courses, but not for a complete bachelor's degree. If you are interested in doing research as a doctoral student, that possibility is available too.

Usage for statistics

Statistics is a universal science. While most fields of science, such as engineering, medicine or psychology, are concerned with a specific context, statistics is about developing and mastering tools for data analysis. Once you have developed skills in probability, principles for statistical inference and statistical software, you are equipped to work with data from most fields, be it rainfall data, frequency of cardiac arrests or customer satisfaction. Statistics appear wherever there is a need to analyze and interpret data.

Accessible statistics

Science has traditionally been communicated through books, scientific conferences and journals. Although these are still important, the internet is playing an increasingly important role. The purpose of research is ultimately that it should be beneficial to society. This is why governmental (non-commercial) research is often made accessible online. This could involve pure data sets (electronic files that can be downloaded to software) but online visual presentation is becoming increasingly used.

The official Statistics Day

There is in fact an official world statistics day, occurring every fifth year on October 20th.

Department of Economics and Statistics

The Department of Economics and Statistics at Linnaeus University is an international academic environment in Växjö and Kalmar. We offer undergraduate (BA), graduate (MA) and PhD level courses with dedicated teachers at the forefront of economics and statistics research.

The department is particularly strong in areas such as Labor and Demographic Economics, Public Economics, Economic History, Environmental Economics and High-Dimensional Data, including Statistical Learning.

Most of the research within these areas cover a broad theme about equality of opportunity, policy analysis and "big data" analytics. The department has a tradition of translating cutting-edge research into practice by collaborating with the surrounding society. We are part of the School of Business and Economics which is AACSB accredited.

The departments main subjects: Economics, statistics.
