Peter Aronsson has been vice-chancellor of Linnaeus University since 1 October 2017. The vice-chancellor is, in cooperation with the pro vice-chancellor, responsible for the overall management of the university and reports to the University Board. The vice-chancellor is responsible for both overseeing the activities and ensuring that the goals set by the University Board are achieved, as well as initiating renewal and changes. The vice-chancellor issues the necessary regulations and has a general responsibility to supervise operations.
The vice-chancellor is appointed by the government for a maximum of six years on the proposal of the University Board and can then be reappointed for two additional terms of three years each.
Peter Aronsson is professor of history and has previously served as pro vice-chancellor and deputy vice-chancellor, dean and vice dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, and vice chair of the Committee for Societal Driving Force. His research includes local and regional history, the dynamics of democratic political culture, history education, use of history, and cultural heritage. His research examines, for example, the role played by local communities and regions in the development of civil society and nation-states, and how and why the history presented by schools, museums, politicians, media, businesses, and individuals has such a significant impact on public awareness. Peter Aronsson is also a member of supervisory boards for the County Administrative Boards in Kalmar and Kronoberg, and a member and vice chairman of the board of the Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR).
