W.J.T. Mitchell, 'From Iconology to Media Aesthetics'

This lecture is part of the IMS lecture series 'Meeting Media Minds – Critical Legacies of Lars Elleström' (MMM). The MMM is a series of open, online lectures intended to commemorate and discuss the work of Lars Elleström.

In this first open lecture in our Meeting Media Minds series, W.J.T. Mitchell will give a presentation titled 'From Iconology to Media Aesthetics'.

Abstract:

Lars Ellestrom was a key contributor to the evolution of new disciplines that emerged across the humanities and social sciences in the last half century. My talk will present my own perspective on these developments, ranging from the emergence of a new iteration of the ancient discipline called “iconology” in the wake of the theory revolution of the 1960s and 70s, to the rise of “visual culture studies” across the human sciences in the 1990s, to the new synthesis of media studies known as “media aesthetics” at the turn of the century.

W.J.T. Mitchell is a Gaylord Donnelley Distinguished Service Professor of English and Art History at the University of Chicago.
