Meeting Media Minds: Kamilla Elliott, Lars Elleström and Bottom-up Categorization

'Meeting Media Minds – Critical Legacies of Lars Elleström' is an open, online lecture series, commemorating the life and work of Lars Elleström. The series is organised by IMS.

In this fifth open lecture in our Meeting Media Minds series, Kamilla Elliott will give a presentation on Lars Elleström and Bottom-up Categorization.

Abstract

The lecture series asks contributors to talk about and discuss one of Lars Elleström’s concepts in relation to their own work. As a meta-critic--someone whose work looks at larger discourses, theories, and debates in intermedial studies--a ‘concept’ for me encompasses what for a semiotician would be far too general and imprecise. And yet this is what my lecture explores in relation to my own work: Elleström’s paradigm-shifting, bottom-up methodology, pioneered in ‘The Modalities of Media: A Model for Understanding Intermedial Relations’ (in Media Borders 2010) and continued throughout his career, through which opened up a host of new ways of investigating intermedial relations by shifting the level of categorisation through which he studied them from higher levels of categorization such as literature, film, music, dance to lower levels of categorization in his ‘bottom-up model of basic media traits’ (Elleström 2017). I discuss this methodology in relation to my own work.
