Title
Racial Social Democracy and the Swedish Welfare State
Abstract
This chapter tracks the role of race in the development of Swedish Social Democracy and the Swedish welfare state. Building on Charles Mills’ work on racial liberalism and social contract theory, it points to some of the racial assumptions and blind spots of Swedish Social Democracy and the Swedish welfare state, both in domestic visions for nationhood, egalitarianism, class unity, gender equality and anti-racism, and in foreign affairs approaches to international solidarity, development and universal human rights.
