Workshop A questioned democracy

Cultural Institutions and the Culture War

Workshop with Knowledge Environment Linnaeus: A Questioned Democracy (If-dem)

With another Trump-presidency ahead of us, what are the potential implications for research into conspiracy theories and disinformation? The incoming president has threatened to curb disinformation research across the USA and both incoming VP Vance and ‘broligarch’ Musk have threatened Europe and the EU with sanctions if the regulation of Very Large Online Platforms will come into force. At the same time, Russia and other actors continue to poison the information environment and support for authoritarian and illiberal parties is growing across Europe, with presidential elections in Romania and the development in Georgia as warning examples.

The LNU Knowledge Environment A Questioned Democracy invites to a workshop on conspiracy theories and the threat to democracy. The primary aim of the workshop is not to showcase research – although we will start at that end – but to think ahead of possible futures of conspiratorial ideation over the next few years and how scholars could and should respond to the development.

NB! Limited places, first come. A few travel bursaries are available, primarily for PhD-students and potential speakers. Lunch is included.

Place: Teleborgs slott, Linnaeus University, Växjö.
