EUniWell Social Talks: From categorisation to discrimination in European migration policies

All people have the right to equal treatment and to not be discriminated against because of gender, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation or age. As questions of discrimination are central to many educational programs and relevant for many disciplines, the EUniWell Arena for Social Equality and Wellbeing launch a series of Social Talks, on the theme "Fighting discrimination in Europe". Experts from universities within EUniWell will address the grounds of discrimination and discuss anti-discrimination actions in different sectors. Lectures are open to everyone who want to learn more about how countries work against discrimination in different areas.

Lecturer: Carole Billet, senior lecturer in Public law, University of Nantes
Title: From categorisation to discrimination in European migration policies

About this lecture: Since the Maastricht Treaty, the European Union has been developing a migration policy, i.e. rules applying to third-country nationals. Numerous rules have gradually been put in place, enabling the emergence of European policies on migration, border controls and asylum. Recently, in May 2024, ten new texts were adopted, forming a new Pact on Migration and Asylum. This set of rules leads to an increasing categorization of migrants, a diversification of controls and the establishment of widely differentiated legal statuses, leading, it is to be feared, to a significant risk of discrimination in the implementation of these rules by the competent national authorities.
