Music and Far Right Extremism Online with Sam de Boise

Welcome to the weekly IMS seminar!

The IMS seminar joins the Multimodal Research Group in Örebro who will be joined by Sam de Boise who will present on "Music and Far Right Extremism Online"

About the seminar:

Music and Far-Right Extremism Online (MuREX)

Music has historically been used by the far-right to spread political messaging, finance political activities and recruit members. Despite declining attendance to physical events since the early 2000s, far-right music has grown significantly online. There is also some evidence that the music styles associated with the far-right have changed considerably over the last ten years. However, it is currently unclear as to the extent of music’s reach, what appeals to listeners, what music is being used by the far-right and how digital technologies have influenced these trends. This presentation will outline the MuREX project and present preliminary data from Stage 1. Based on 189,000 posts discussing music from far-right forums and 9 social media channels it aims to quantitatively map which music is discussed, spread and valued amongst those using English and Swedish-language far-right forums and websites. It touches too on methodological issues around studying reception in these spaces which may be useful for thinking through the relationship between musical aesthetics and judgment.
