The Arctic - Stories from the edge of the ice

The Arctic and life aboard the icebreaker Oden

Now you have the chance to meet an artist and a researcher in a lunchtime conversation about life and research out on the ice – and about how art can help us understand this extreme environment. Ida Rödén and Hanna Farnelid take us to the Arctic’s vast ice landscapes and expeditions aboard the icebreaker Oden. Feel free to bring your lunch!

During this lunchtime conversation (In Swedish), we will explore both artistic and scientific perspectives from the Arctic.

Ida Rödén shares how extreme environments and encounters with scientific work influence her creative process. Hanna Farnelid offers insights into the most surprising and challenging experiences from fieldwork. Together, they reflect on how art and science can interact to deepen our understanding of the Arctic and climate change.

Hanna Farnelid, Associate Professor of Marine Ecology at Linnaeus University, has participated in three research expeditions with Oden in both the Arctic and Antarctica. Her research focuses on how climate change affects phytoplankton and ecosystem dynamics in the polar oceans.

Ida Rödén, artist, joined the 2023 expedition ARTofMELT. During the journey, she documented life on board and created a visual diary portraying the work of the researchers and crew, as well as their encounters with the ice-covered landscapes.
