IMS Lars Elleström Memorial Guest Lecture: Chiel Kattenbelt

Chiel Kattenbelt visits IMS in March and June 2026 to engage in dialogue on intermedial and multimodal studies. His program includes seminars connected to Lars Elleström’s influential work, a colloquium, where participants will analyse concrete examples, case studies, from an intermedial and multimodal perspective.

Abstract

A phenomenological and sign-pragmatic approach to intermediality

In my lecture, I will explore the philosophical underpinnings of my phenomenological and sign-pragmatic approach to art. From my perspective, art is understood as a specific form of communicative action, in which everything revolves around making experiences observable and tangible. I will address questions such as "what constitutes the specificity of aesthetic communication?" and "what fundamental motives can we discern in it?" Within the domain of art, I will raise the issue of intermediality to clarify what, from my perspective, intermediality essentially entails. I will take this opportunity to reiterate the choices I made in developing the concept of intermediality, also relating it to other approaches, in particular Lars Elleström’s approach. I will also demonstrate how much my approach is informed by my background in philosophy and in media and performance studies on the one hand and in theatre practice on the other.
