Open lectures by this year's new professors, Kalmar

This year's so-called inauguration lectures will take place in Kalmar on Tuesday 27 January and in Växjö on Monday 26 and Wednesday 28 January, by the new professors that are to be inaugurated at the Academic Ceremony in Växjö on Friday 30 January. The lectures are open to all; welcome!

All lectures, except for the first one, will also be live-streamed directly on this web page, starting at 11.15 am.

Graham Butler
Professor of European law
Law, Judicial Power, and Political Questions: Navigating the EU’s Constitutional Legal Order
This lecture examines the evolving boundaries of judicial power within the European Union’s constitutional legal order, focusing on the emergence of a political question doctrine as a tool for managing the interface between legal and non-legal matters. It explores how courts navigate situations where legal questions intersect with high-level policy choices, and the implications of recognizing certain matters as non-justiciable for the principle of effective judicial protection.
The lecture situates this development within broader constitutional theory and the institutional practice of the EU, highlighting its significance for maintaining institutional balance, ensuring legal certainty, and preserving the autonomy of political decision-making. It also considers whether judicial interpretation can provide a sustainable solution to structural tensions arising from the internal allocation of powers within the EU’s decision-making framework, or whether deeper treaty reform is ultimately inevitable. By engaging with these themes, the lecture invites reflection on the role of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) in shaping the contours of Europe’s constitutional design and the limits of adjudication in a transnational legal order.

Nya sätt att arbeta på uppstår och arbetsmarknaden förändras, som alltid. Samtidigt hör vi ofta politiker tala uppskattande om den svenska modellen – den ska alltid värnas. Vad gömmer sig bakom talet om svenska modellen, och har den hängt med i utvecklingen?

Så kan lärare arbeta för att främja både kunskap och social förmåga i utbildning för barn i skolstartsålder
När barn kliver in i skolans värld läggs grunden för deras framtida lärande – men också för deras identitetsskapande och deras känsla av tillhörighet. I min forskning undersöker jag hur lärare arbetar i utbildning för barn i skolstartsåldern, och vad som främjar både kunskapande och socialisering, och samtidigt kvalificerar barn för fortsatt utbildning.
Jag vill i min forskning visa hur utbildning för de yngsta barnen i skolan kan spela en avgörande roll i att förebygga utanförskap genom att skola och fritidshem blir platser för inkludering. Här formas inte bara nya kunskaper, utan också gemenskaper och tillhörighet.

Beneath the Surface: The Deep Biosphere as a Mirror of Earth’s History and a Key to a Sustainable Future
My research is on the deep biosphere - one of Earth’s least explored ecosystems – holding vital clues to the planet’s evolution through geological time. Studying microbial life and chemical interactions in the subsurface uncovers processes that influence greenhouse gases, critical metals, and toxic substances. This knowledge is essential for addressing sustainability challenges and guiding the transition to a resilient future.

Är AI smart nog att lösa sjukvårdens problem och vad krävs av oss?
Jag forskar om hur AI kan hjälpa oss att tidigare uppmärksamma människor som riskerar att må psykiskt eller fysiskt sämre, och hur sådan teknik kan bli en naturlig del av sjukvården. Men AI löser inget på egen hand. För att tekniken ska fungera i verkligheten måste den utvecklas i dialog med både patienter och vårdpersonal – och då ställs stora och viktiga etiska frågor på sin spets.
