Shiyan Hu

Strategic venture on future embedded computer systems

The Department of Computer Science takes a strategic initiative in the field of embedded systems. Shiyan Hu, an internationally leading expert in this field, has been hired as a new professor and later this fall three new senior lecturers will join the department.

Shiyan Hu is a new Full Professor of Embedded Systems at the Department of Computer Science at Linnaeus University. His research has been focused on embedded systems and cyber-physical systems. Embedded systems are computer systems that are important parts of many different types of devices or machines, such as mobiles, cars and airplanes. Cyber-physical systems refer to the deep integration of sensors/software ("cyber") and hardware ("physical").

– My research mainly concerns energy systems and I study the interaction between the cyber system and the physical energy system. It could, for example, be a power distribution system where a sensor senses something and the local grid controlling system takes an action based on that.

Internationally leading

Shiyan Hu is an internationally leading expert in his field of research. He is chairman of the IEEE Technical Committee on Cyber-Physical Systems and Editor-in-Chief for IET Cyber-Physical Systems: Theory & Applications. An area that is of particular interest for him is cyber-physical systems security.

– Recently, there have been a number of cyber attacks against power systems and my current focus is how to mitigate their impacts and defend against them. Developing a strong defence system for existing cyber-physical power systems is one of the goals of my research.

Shiyan Hu was born in Beijing in China and moved to the United States in 2002, where he received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees. He was an Associate Professor at Michigan Technological University before coming to Växjö.

– Linnaeus University is a university full of future prospects. Here I can find many opportunities for collaboration within my research areas. Companies that work with embedded systems and cyber-physical systems and the power industry are especially welcome!

A strategic initiative

The new professorship is part of a venture that the Department of Computer Science, the Faculty of Technology, Rector and Växjö Municipality make in computer engineering and embedded systems. In addition to Shiyan Hu, three new Senior Lecturers will join the department in the autumn.

– Embedded systems are everywhere in today's society and are developing fast. Therefore, it is important to broaden and deepen our skills in this important field, says Jesper Andersson, Head of Department.
