The student union changes name

The student union has now changed name from Linnéstudenterna to Linnaeus Union.

The background to the new name is the fact that the old name “Linnéstudenterna” sometimes caused confusion as it could just as well refer to “a student who studies at Linnaeus University”.

“Through this name change, we strengthen the union’s identity and avoid misunderstandings”, says Rebecca Esselgren, chair of Linnaeus Union.

The work with the name change has been carried out together with the union members and a request for new name proposals was published on social media.

“We received many different proposals and Linnaeus Union was a recurring one. Following some discussion, this name was brought to a vote at the member meeting and the members voted in favour of the new name”, says Rebecca.

In connection to the name change, the union has also reviewed its logotype and graphic design.

“The new name, of course, also required a new logotype and what could be better than engaging our fantastic members for this job. Said and done, we designed a competition for our members. The logotype competition exceeded our expectations and we received some 30 contributions. Following an internal vote, we chose Alice Smygegård’s proposal”, Rebecca concludes.

“The idea for the new logo is quite simple. Based on the union’s name, I wanted to include Småland’s provincial flower Linnéa, which I tried to depict in a clear and stylish way. After having tried a number of different versions, I came up with the final result”, explains Alice Smygegård.

The new name applies as from 20 August, when Linnaeus Union’s new website was also launched.
