Be extra cautious in your IT environment

The IT Office at Linnaeus University urges everyone to be extra cautious concerning cyberattacks on account of the latest development in Ukraine.

One possible result of the stricter international sanctions on Russia is an increased risk of cyberattacks. Therefore, it is important that everyone now is extra cautious of any forms of fraud.

Update your computer

One common reason for successful cyberattacks is that one’s computer has not been updated with the latest security updates. This applies also for other equipment like tablets and cellphones.

If you have a computer or other equipment that has not been updated with the latest security updates in a longer period of time, we recommend that you do this now. It is important that you continuously implement the security updates suggested by your equipment.

Do not click on unknown links

Phishing, when someone tries to get a hold of your password via email, is a common method at frauds. This is often done through elaborate bluff emails with links that direct you to fake websites that require login. If a user logs in, the user’s login information is immediately shown to the swindler, often without the user even noticing it.

Once the swindlers have gotten hold of the login information, it can be used to access the university’s IT systems or your own computer and equipment.

Change password

If you suspect that something has happened or that someone unauthorised has gotten access too your information, change your password immediately.

If you have been subjected to fraud that in any way may affect the university’s security, like, for instance, login information to the university, suspicious emails you have received from the university, inexplicable changes to your learning platform, etc., you should report this immediately to our IT support. A swift report can mitigate the consequences both for you and for the university as a whole.
