Bitch I’m A Dream – a tribute song to the LGBTQIA+ movement

It took the two singer-songwriter students Malin and Momo no more than a morning at the piano to write this year’s Växjö Pride song – an important song about both exploring and daring to embrace the person you really want to be.

This year’s official Växjö Pride song is called “Bitch I’m A Dream” and was written by Malin Törnqvist and Momo Mörk Shingai, who are both taking the course Singer-songwriter II. The song is on Spotify and is an up-beat tune with a Eurovision Song Contest vibe. Malin and Momo’s idea with the song is to shine a light on what it’s like being queer in today’s world.

“It feels absolutely fantastic that our song was the one that was chosen. We’re incredibly proud of our song and we’re thrilled that Pride liked it. It’s supposed to feel personal. It’s important to us that LGBTQIA+ people feel seen in the lyrics. We want it to feel affirmative and to boost people to dare to look into themselves, explore, and find that they’re a freaking dream! It’s a tribute to the LGBTQIA+ community, giving attitude, self-confidence, and self-esteem”, says Malin.

Malin and Momo have written music together before, finding that they complement each other in a good way since Malin is good at creating catchy tunes, while Momo is good at writing lyrics.

“I’m nonbinary, so the line ‘I can be a nonbinary babe, just look at me’ is partly me encouraging myself. The verses are dedicated to other trans people, whether you’re in the process of figuring out who you are or living your best life where you feel free to express yourself exactly the way you want to. The chorus is more universal. No matter who you are and where you’re from, you always have been and always will be a dream”, says Momo.

Malin and Momo wrote the song in a morning at the piano; they have made a few changes to the lyrics after that, but the main part of the work was done in a few hours. They felt straight away that there was something special about the song. Both think that they have made huge progress as songwriters thanks to the singer-songwriter course.

“It’s a great course that is great fun. The song writing camp was one of the parts that was most fun, where we got to work more intensively for a while, together with others. Before, we basically just created music on our own, but here we’ve been able to feel the joy and how much better things get when we put our heads together. Like in this case”, Malin and Momo conclude.

Malin and Momo will perform the song on the main stage during Växjö Pride, on 13 May. Momo will sing the verses and Malin the chorus.
