Ukrainian president Zelenskyj gave speech to Linnaeus University’s students and staff
Ukrainian president Volodomyr Zelenskyj gave a speech via video link to students and staff at Linnaeus University and other universities that are part of the European university alliance EUniWell (the European university for well-being). His message was short and clear – we will continue to fight for our freedom!
On Europe Day, 9 May, EUniWell hosted a virtual event with focus on peace, unity, and solidarity with Ukraine.
After opening speeches by professor Volodymyr Bugrov, vice-chancellor at Taras Shevchenko University of Kyiv, and EUniWell's chair professor Beatrix Busse, the floor was handed over to the president on the big screen.
Dressed simply in a dark hoodie with Ukraine's national emblem in white on his chest, president Zelenskyj spoke about the tense situation in Ukraine. He talked about the challenges that both the nation and Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, which has been hard hit by Russia's invasion, are currently facing.
"From fear, courage is also born. Russia's invasion of Ukraine is a reminder to the whole world that it takes courage to stand up against and stop the horrific things that are happening," said President Zelenskyj.
He also talked about how, despite repeated grenade attacks and air raid alarms, Ukraine's residents somehow manage to keep the dream of a united, free Ukraine alive.
After President Zelenskyj's speech, each university was given the opportunity to ask a question. One of the questions that was asked was what Europe can do to continue supporting Ukraine.
"Today is Europe Day and Ukraine feels more united with Europe than ever before. So, continue to show your support. Continue to fight for freedom. Not on the battlefield, but together, as Europeans", President Zelenskyj concluded.
