The ERIC Database Faces Major Budget Cuts

As a consequence of U.S. policy and decisions by the Department of Education (DOGE), the educational database ERIC will continue to operate, but on a reduced scale and with a significantly decreased budget.

On April 28, 2025, the Institute of Education Sciences announced in a press release that, despite earlier reports suggesting a complete shutdown, indexing of materials in the ERIC database will continue—but now with a “refined scope.” Exactly what this entails remains unclear, but one immediate effect is that the number of indexed sources will be reduced by 45 percent as of April 25, dropping from around 1,200 to 700 titles. In addition, ERIC’s user support service has been permanently shut down.

There is no indication that journals no longer indexed by ERIC will stop publishing new issues, but their visibility and discoverability may be affected. Currently, previously published material appears to remain available in the database.

The university library continues to monitor the situation.
