Research Grant awarded for PhD project on Gender and Diplomacy in Colonial Southeast Asia

We are pleased to share that Professor Stefan Amirell has been awarded a research grant of 2,000,000 SEK from the Crafoord Foundation for the project Gender, Diplomacy and Imperialism: How Gendered Practices Shaped the Diplomatic Negotiations in the Colonial World of the Malay Peninsula During the Long 19th Century.

The grant provides extended funding for the project, which started in February 2024. It investigates the intersection of gender, diplomacy, and imperialism, offering new insights into how gendered norms and practices influenced diplomatic relations in the colonial context of the Malay Peninsula. By examining these dynamics, the research aims to deepen our understanding of the cultural and political mechanisms that shaped colonial rule and international relations during this period.

The research is being carried out by Isak Kronberg as part of his doctoral studies, under the supervision of Professor Amirell and Associate Professor Birgit Tremml-Werner (Stockholm University).
