The eighth ENIUGH congress in Växjö – on critical global history

On 10–12 September 2025, Linnaeus University in Växjö hosted the eighth congress organised by the European Network on Universal and Global History (ENIUGH). The theme of this year’s congress was “Critical Global Histories: Methodological Reflections and Thematic Expansions” – a way of both looking back and reimagining global history.

The congress was opened by Linnaeus University’s vice-chancellor Peter Aronsson followed by the chair of the organising committee, Stefan Amirell, and ENIUGH’s chair, Katja Castryck-Nauman. Thereafter, Federico Navarrete (Instituto de Investigaciones Históricas) gave a well-received keynote lecture entitled “Cosmohistories, the multiplicity of worlds and their histories”. The lecture can be viewed in full on LNU Play. View the lecture here.

During the three days of the congress, participants had the opportunity to attend around 100 panels and roundtable discussions. The topics covered a wide range of periods, regions and themes – a clear example of the diversity and breadth that characterise global history, both within and beyond Europe. The theme of this year’s congress also encouraged reflection on some of the challenges facing the field, such as criticism of Eurocentrism, neoliberal perspectives, and the lack of indigenous and gender analyses.

“That we succeeded in gathering so many scholars in global history in Växjö demonstrates that Linnaeus University is one of the leading universities in this research field in Europe. The theme of the congress, ‘Critical Global Histories’, is also clearly linked to the prominent research environment in postcolonial studies at Linnaeus University Centre for Colonial and Postcolonial Studies. These have been truly rewarding days,” Stefan Eklöf Amirell, professor at Linnaeus University, concluded.

Since its founding in 2002, ENIUGH has grown to become the leading international association for research and teaching in world and global history. The Växjö congress brought together some 300 scholars and doctoral students from different countries and disciplines – a meeting place for both experienced scholars and the next generation.
