The European Commission appoints Cristina Trenta to the VAT Expert Group for a third time

Sees VAT as a powerful economic tool for driving and supporting the ongoing transition to a greener and more equal society.

Cristina Trenta, professor of public law at the Department of Law at Linnaeus University, has been appointed by the European Commission to the prestigious VAT (Value Added Tax) Expert Group. The expert group holds the responsibility of advising the commission on new legislative acts, ongoing policy initiatives, and the practical implementation of VAT legislation.

This marks the third time Cristina Trenta has been selected to serve as a member of this expert group and the fifth time she receives a high-level mandate with the European Institutions. The latter includes being part of the EU Observatory on the Online Platform Economy and one of the experts for the Directorate-General for Communication Networks, Content and Technologies (DG CNECT) on next-generation digital technologies and their role in Europe’s future strategies and capabilities.

A vital bridge

As a researcher and teacher, Cristina Trenta views her appointments as a vital bridge between academia and policymaking.

“I believe the opportunity to collaborate with the European institutions over such a long period of time is one of the highest professional and academic achievements of my career and something I try to bring to my work as an educator and researcher everyday, in class as much as in Brussels."

Cristina Trenta sees VAT as a powerful economic tool for driving the ongoing transition to a more sustainable future. As Sweden and Europe have to learn to consume differently, VAT can help to both drive and support a greener and more equal society, provided we work to address and resolve the current direct and indirect discriminatory effects of the VAT system on women and other vulnerable groups, and the challenges that emerging technologies pose to its consolidated models.
