Modernising our lecture halls – fewer desktop computers
In summer 2025, Linnaeus University will phase out around 95 desktop computers in lecture halls. These machines are outdated and do not meet the technical requirements for Windows 11. Support for Windows 10 will end in autumn 2025, and replacing all machines would involve considerable cost. At the same time, both staff and students increasingly use their own laptops, which reduces the need for fixed desktops.
Some key lecture halls will retain desktop computers – including Wicksell, Myrdal, the IKEA hall, Aula Sienna and Fullriggaren – and these rooms will be clearly marked in TimeEdit and Easit.
To ensure access when needed, students will be able to borrow laptops through the IT department. A self-service borrowing system, similar to Instabox, is also being explored. Staff will be offered support and digital walkthroughs for connecting and teaching with hybrid technology, and certain rooms will be available for testing during the transition. Instructional materials can be found in the Service Portal.
This change is part of a larger effort to modernise and future-proof the university’s IT environment – a step already taken by several other Swedish universities with great results.
