Nordic Colonialism in 2026
On 12 March 2026, LNUC Concurrences held the most recent instalment in our ‘(Con)Current Events' series, where we examine the active afterlives of colonial history and colonialism as an ongoing process. ‘Nordic Colonialism in 2026’ brought together the editors of the recently published research volume, Marken, Vattnet, Tankarna: Konsekvenser för Samer av Svensk Politik (2026). In a panel presentation, Gunlög Fur (LNU), and Anna-Lill Drugge (Umeå), and Jonas M. Nordin (Lund) discussed the process of editing the collection, and its contribution to research around the Truth Commission for the Sámi people. The panel was followed by a roundtable titled ‘The Truth Commissions and their Outcomes’, which assembled researchers and stakeholders in the truth commissions from across the Nordics for a critical and in-depth conversation. The roundtable included Anni-Kristiina Juuso (former Secretary General of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in Finland), Amalie Drage Habbestad (Tromsø U.), Louise Schou Therkildsen (U. of Southern Denmark), and Laura Junka-Aikio (U. of Lapland); the panel was chaired by Gunlög Fur and Liv Nilsson Stutz.
