The week of Academic Ceremony 2025

The Academic Ceremony is a big, annual event at Linnaeus University. At the Academic Ceremony, we celebrate the university’s academic achievements through the conferral of new doctors and honorary doctors, the inauguration of new professors, and by handing out academic awards. Throughout the week, we will also be organising a variety of other interesting activities, which will be open to the public. You will find the whole program here shortly.

Programme Academic Ceremony

Friday, 31 January 2025. Kalmarsalen, Skeppsbrogatan 49, Kalmar.

  • 4pm Academic Ceremony 
    Conferment of doctoral degrees and honorary doctorates, and inauguration of new professors.
    Open to the public. No pre-registration required, but seating is limited. We kindly ask guests to be in place and seated in the hall by 3.45pm.
  • 6pm Reception for invited guests
  • 7.30pm Banquet with entertainment for invited guests

The full week is brimming with interesting activities

The same week as the Academic Ceremony takes place, other exciting activities are arranged, all of which are open to anyone who wishes to participate, with no prior registration required for any of the activities. The programme will be updated with additional activities as plans are firmed up.

  • Inaugural lectures (open lectures) by the university’s new professors will be held in both Kalmar and Växjö. If you are interested in learning more about the research conducted at the university, you are warmly welcome to attend –young or old, student or professional. Between the lectures there will be mingling and refreshments.

    Kalmar: Tuesday 28 January.

  • Talk with the honorary doctors Martin Tunström and Sverker Sörlin: The challenges, boundaries, and opportunities of academic freedom.
    Thursday, 30 January, 4–5pm, the University Library in Kalmar. Learn more here (Swedish only).

  • LinnéTalks: From vinyl to AI – music-making in a technological age with Ola Salo and Brita Björs.
    Thursday, 30 January, 6pm–7pm, the University Library, Kalmar. Find out more here (Swedish only).

  • An exhibition about the Academic Ceremony will be open throughout the week. Here, you can learn more about the rituals and traditions of the ceremony and take a closer look at the insignia: the doctoral hat, the laurel wreath, and the ring.
    Open throughout the week. Galleri Linnéa in Kalmar and Galleri Linné in Växjö, at the respective university libraries.

  • Poster exhibition featuring this year’s new doctors. Are you curious to learn more about those who completed their doctorates in 2024 and who will be conferred their degrees during the ceremony?
    Visit the poster exhibition in Zenit, the Culmen Building in Kalmar, and Glaset, the K  Building in Växjö. Drop by at your convenience!
